Why Does My Dog Follow Me And Not My Husband?

Dogs are known to be man’s best friend. Maybe women too! Lol!

It can follow you for different reasons. Since the dog is so curious and social, it will accompany you to understand you more.

It could also be insecure, sick, or anxious. It could have some boredom and want to have some company.

The dog also feels it has a responsibility of helping you “patrol.” If the dog has a lot of energy within him, he might want to discharge it by walking around with you. Sometime you will realize that the dog has a preference.

For quite some time, I have been wondering why my dog keeps on following me and not my husband.

I consulted a dog specialist and here is a list of the possible reasons:

1). Hostility

If your dog realizes that your husband is hostile towards you, either by beating or shouting at you, he is likely to take sides. The dog can sense aggressiveness towards you.

Even if he has been following your husband, he will stop and start following you more.

If your husband is hostile towards the dog either by shouting or beating him, the dog will not be comfortable around him.

Since he is a social animal, he associates well with someone friendly towards him. If your husband is well built and speaks in a deeper voice, your dog is likely to feel some level of intimidation.

Dog’s prefers to stick to female adults since they are more welcoming and friendly.

2. Stranger

If by the time you got married, you owned a dog, then the dog might not be familiar with your husband. Mostly, dogs feel insecure if there is a new family member.

They feel like the new member can harm them. The dog will feel the divided attention. Until it gains some level of trust to your husband, it will continue following you.

3. No Bonding

Just like a human being, bonding increases some level of trust and love. Your husband might be very busy or working away from the family.

Even if he is the owner of the dog, it will not feel much affection to him, as compared to you, who is always near it.

If you have a routine of going for a walk with the dog, giving it food at a particular time, washing and playing with it, it will bond more with you.

Though the dog like associating more with the leaders, if your husband has no time to give the dog the attention, then it will follow you.

Physicaltouch is also essential. If the husband does not have a grooming session withthe dog, he does not massage or even show some love, then the dog will preferyou. It will follow you more to get some more attention.

4). Smell

The dog’s sense of smell is so high. If your husband has recently changed his perfume or there is a particularly strong perfume he applies, and the dog doesn’t like it, then it won’t follow him.

Your husband could also be having a natural scent that makes the dog to prefer you.

5). Dog Prefers One Person

Once the puppy is born, it may meet different people. According to the American Kennel Club, at the age of 7weeks to 4 months, the dog socializes the most. She develops her personality concerning reaction to different environments.

At that age, if the person who was with the puppy was a lady, then your dog will prefer you to your husband.

Since the brain of your puppy at this age has a tremendous receptive, you need to introduce him to the family and places.

If the man who was taking care of the puppy was hostile, towards the dog, then it will prefer female.  If he was not wearing a hat, your dog might not be comfortable with your husband, if he wears a hat.

If you adopt an adult dog and is not friendly with your husband, relax, some things can help them bond.

You can be strolling with the dog and your husband or even have play dates.

If you feel uncomfortable by the way your dog is behaving towards your husband, you don’t have to worry.

In this next section, we’ll discuss a few ideas that can improve the dog’s attitude towards your husband:

1. When your husband is not busy, you can have play dates with your dog.

You can play fetch, try a hide and seek, not to mention tug. With time the dog will start feeling secure in your husband’s presence. Don’t be shocked if the dog begins following him more.

2. Your dog is so curious, and it likes to learn.

With your husband, you can have a training session with your dog. As the dog learns new techniques and reinforces the old one, they will have an excellent opportunity to bond.

3.Together with your husband, you can go to the field and play.  Try a game where your husband and the doghave to work together as a team. Some of those games include the agility or flyball. As they continue playing as a team, their relationship will significantlyimprove.

4. Since the dog tends to love the person who feeds it, your husband can be feeding it when he is around.

You need to ensure that the food he is giving to your pet is healthy and with the right quantity. Ensure that the food has a wholesome protein.

As he feeds the dog, he can maintain eye contact, since these shows some love and increase bonding.

5. You need to fix the scent issue.

Does your dog follow your husband before he goes to the bathroom? Then, there is an issue with perfume, soap, aftershave, or lotion.

You can change beauty products and check if there is any change in your dog’s behavior. Research also indicates that dogs like some spays since they make them feel at ease.

Such sprays include the lavender spray. Once your husband uses it, the dog might start following him to feel the effect.

6. Showing affection might make the dog change his attitude towards your husband.

You can learn to solve your family issues more calmly and soberly. The husband can also avoid yelling at the dog or even beating him.

When there is joy in the family, the dog is likely to feel more comfortable.

The dog is a peaceful and friendly animal. It is also very curious. The way you treat it will determine the level of affection it will reciprocate.

If you realize that the dog has no proper relationship with your husband, you don’t need to be sad. There are some steps you can take and improve the relationship.
